Whitney Cummings revealed that Sabrina Carpenter‘s career might have taken a completely different direction under other circumstances.

Speaking with People at ELLE’s Women in Hollywood Celebration on Tuesday, November 19, at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills, the 42-year-old comedian reflected on the lessons she’s learned throughout her career.

“This business is mostly rejection,” Cummings shared, explaining that she’s had to become “super comfortable with rejection.”

The creator of Two Broke Girls noted that rejection can sometimes be a blessing in disguise, often paving the way for better opportunities. As an example, she brought up Carpenter, 25, who once auditioned for a role on the ABC sitcom The Conners while Cummings was briefly serving as showrunner.

“Sabrina Carpenter auditioned … and it wasn’t the right fit. She got a rejection that day when we were casting the daughter,” Cummings said, referencing the role that ultimately went to Shameless actress Emma Kenney.

“And honestly, thank God we said no to her,” she added. “Because she’d be stuck on a sitcom set and not being Sabrina Carpenter.”

Carpenter, who began her career on the Disney Channel series Girl Meets World, has since risen to stardom as a singer with hits like “Espresso,” “Please Please Please,” and “Taste.” She is currently headlining her international Short n’ Sweet Tour.

Cummings further reflected on the concept of rejection, tying it back to Carpenter’s story. “We’re so trained to think winning and getting a yes is the goal,” she said. “But sometimes a yes is the worst thing. You could end up stuck in the wrong place for years, doing the wrong thing.”

The comedian also shared valuable advice she received from a fellow woman in the industry: “Get your personal life in order, [save] the drama for your work — you know, have a boring life.” According to Cummings, this wisdom became clear once her career began gaining momentum.

Now a new mom, after welcoming her first child in December 2023, Cummings continues to host her popular Good for You Podcast. Each week, she sits down with a mix of “friends, comics, celebs, experts, [and] weirdos.” The show is available to stream on all major platforms.
