Ellie is miraculously immune and the Fireflies wanted to use her DNA and brain cells to potentially make a cure for the fungal plague that’s destroyed the entire world. Joel, however, had grown to see Ellie as his daughter and couldn’t let that happen. Abby and her friends lost their friends and family in Joel’s violent rampage, kicking off an endless cycle of revenge and violence in the HBO show.
