Joel McHale is all about transparency.
The 53-year-old comedian opened up about all the ways he’s worked to maintain a full head of hair over the years, and shared his plastic surgery tips during an appearance on the “We Might Be Drunk” podcast earlier this week.
“Yeah, I’m fully bald. This is four transplants,” McHale shared.
“I did it way back when it was a strip, which was, uh, painful,” the “Community” actor said.
The ‘strip’ method refers to Follicular Unit Transplantation, which is an older hair transplant technique that involves surgically removing a strip of scalp.
“Don’t do a strip,” McHale said, instructing one of the co-hosts to “do plucking” instead, calling it “a miracle.”
“Plucking” is a term for doing hair transplants via the Follicular Unit Extraction method, which extracts individual hair follicles and then implants them in the affected areas.
“It’s great, do it now,” McHale said of the new method, before shouting out his doctor, Dr. Parsa Mohebi.
McHale, who said he paid around $10,000 for the procedure, added a warning for anyone who might be interested in getting a transplant themselves.
“I can get you a name of a guy in Turkey,” McHale said, as the conversation turned to a popular spot for people to undergo transplants. “But just make sure, ’cause if somebody is like, ‘I’ll do it for $3,000,’ then you don’t [do it]. You get what you pay for.”
The comedian has spoken about undergoing the procedure over the years, and explained the root cause of why he didn’t want to go fully bald.
“My head is not a good shape,” McHale joked during an appearance on Burt Kreischer’s podcast, “2 Bears, 1 Cave” back in 2023.
“It comes to a point,” he said of his head shape. “Like someone’s pulling a sheet.”
In recent years, celebrities like Amy Schumer and Kylie Jenner have won praise for being open and honest about the plastic surgery they’ve had.
Jenner ― who denied going under the knife for many years ― recently shared exactly what kind of breast augmentation she had done.
