The Television Critics Association has canceled its summer press tour, the org announced to members on Wednesday. The TCA had previously also canceled its winter event due to low interest from networks and studios; this time, the org said once again there would not be a tour “after much discussion and negotiation.”

The fate of the TCA press tour has been the focus of much conversation due to the spotty nature of the event in recent years. As networks and studios have pulled back on supporting the once-vibrant twice-a-year tours, the COVID-19 pandemic and the dual 2023 Hollywood strikes also put the tour on frequent pause.

“Conversations about organizing summer tour have been ongoing since the summer of 2024,” the org wrote to members. “Every network, studio, and streaming platform was contacted about presenting, and the TCA Board met with all in February. We left the meeting hopeful that the summer tour was happening.

“In early March, we had commitments for six days of presentations. Later, most of those networks told us the tour was not financially viable for them. Additionally, we had interest from other networks, streaming services, and industry organizations about participating. Ultimately, all told us they could not afford the cost of tour,” the TCA added.

The TCA noted that “the systems that once supported tour, in Hollywood and journalism, have changed. Networks have consolidated into just a few companies and cut publicity staff. There are considerable costs for those presenting panels — the hotel and AV are expensive for the networks. The TCA Board reduced some of those costs by half, but that was not enough.”

This means that the TCA Awards will once again figure out what to do without a tour; the org said its still looking at how to present a “reimagined TCA Awards ceremony,” and that voting will continue in June as planned. The TCA is also looking at evaluating its dues structure, given the lack of tours.

The TCA will meet on Zoom with members tomorrow to explain the current status of the org and its tours.
