Alyssa Farah Griffin doesn’t understand why Meghan Markle would refer to herself as “Her Royal Highness” among her close friends.

On this morning’s episode of The View, the co-hosts weighed in on Markle’s latest controversy, which came after she signed a card using her royal title when she sent a friend a jar of her homemade jam. Because she and Prince Harry stepped away from their royal duties five years ago, Prince William is reportedly planning to strip them of their titles once he ascends to the throne.

“There are no heroes here,” Griffin said. “I find it a little cringe to give a gift to a close friend and sign it, ‘Her Royal Highness.’ But I find it way cringier and just very, very petty that Prince William is reportedly just waiting to take the throne and be King so he can strip her of her title.”

“Like, you only live once. Make up with your brother and his wife,” she added, referring to the years-long feud between Prince William and Prince Harry.

Sara Haines also found it strange for Markle to use her royal title with friends, noting, “It’s kind of like a doctor when you keep referring to them as Doc and they’re like, ‘Call me Susan.’ I would never refer to myself as Her Royal Highness.”

Sunny Hostin, however, did not think it was a “bad look” for Markle.

“The agreement that was made [after they stepped down from their royal roles] did not remove the title,” Hostin explained. “It restricted the way it was to be used. It was not to be used publicly. And she was giving a friend some strawberry jam that she made herself and she wrote, ‘HRH The Duchess of Sussex.’ That was a private gift.”

Hostin also pointed to the late Queen Elizabeth II’s wish to make Camilla Parker Bowles the “Queen Consort” instead of the Queen after her passing — a rule that King Charles III changed once he was crowned.

“If she can be the Queen, Meghan can be HRH,” Hostin declared.

The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
