Ryan Coogler‘s hit vampire film “Sinners” will begin streaming on July 4 on Max.

Set in the early 1930s in the American South, “Sinners” follows the Smokestack twins, both portrayed by Michael B. Jordan, as they return to their Mississippi hometown and recruit a group of musicians and singers for a night of dancing at a juke joint. However, the evening soon takes a bloody turn after vampire hunters try to break in and infiltrate the evening of Black pride and community. The movie has been widely praised for Coogler’s direction, Jordan’s dual performances and its killer soundtrack.

Jordan is joined in the powerhouse cast by Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, Omar Benson Miller and Jayme Lawson. The film was shot by Autumn Durald Arkapaw, who previously worked on “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and made history with “Sinners” by shooting on 70mm Imax film.

In its second weekend at the box office, “Sinners” earned $45 million domestically, marking an impressive 6% drop from its opening weekend number. To date, the film has grossed more than $360 million on a reported $90 million production budget.

In his review, Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman called the film “a lavishly serious popcorn movie,” noting how it is “the rare mainstream horror film that’s about something weighty and soulful: the wages of sin in Black America.”

Following the film’s impressive legs at the box office, Variety‘s Clayton Davis called the film “the first Oscar movie of 2025,” with previous Coogler films “Black Panther” and “Creed” receiving Oscar nominations.
