Lin-Manuel Miranda gave fans a powerful reminder of the era-defining impact of “Hamilton” when he reunited with the musical’s original cast for an epic performance at the 2025 Tony Awards Sunday night.

Miranda, a three-time Tony winner, marked the musical’s 10th anniversary by taking the stage with co-stars Daveed Diggs, Christopher Jackson, Leslie Odom Jr., Renée Elise Goldsberry and Phillipa Soo for a medley of songs from the show, including “My Shot,” “The Room Where It Happens,” and “Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story.”

The cast notably eschewed the colonial garb of the stage production for all-black suits and gowns. The sole exception was Jonathan Groff, who winked at the royal garb of his character, King George III, by donning a red blazer to perform “You’ll Be Back.”

The evening’s host, Cynthia Erivo, introduced the cast by noting how “Hamilton” had “reinvigorated the American theater and changed not just Broadway, but how Americans views their own history.”

Not surprisingly, the performance won a standing ovation.

“Hamilton” opened on Broadway in August 2015 after a smash off-Broadway run at New York’s Public Theater, garnering rapturous reviews. The musical won 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Actor in a Musical for Odom and Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Diggs, as well as the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The production was later captured for posterity as a Disney+ live special.

Along the way, there have been brushes with controversy. Earlier this year, producer Jeffrey Seller announced that “Hamilton” had canceled its planned run at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., after President Donald Trump named himself chairman of the national performing arts center, traditionally a bipartisan institution.

This season, a number of notable “Hamilton” veterans are back on Broadway. Groff, a 2024 Tony winner for “Merrily We Roll Along,” is nominated again this year for his portrayal of Bobby Darin in “Just in Time.” Jackson, meanwhile, joined the cast of Alicia Keys’ musical “Hell’s Kitchen” this spring.
