Miley Cyrus is opening up about how her public persona has affected her love life over the years, often at great cost.
The “Flowers” singer said that a particularly provocative period of her life, when she was making the 2013 album “Bangerz,” caused her relationship with her then-fiance, Liam Hemsworth, to derail.
“When me and Liam split up the first time with ‘Bangerz,’ it was because it was like, I was this provocateur and it was highly sexualized,” Cyrus said during a candid sit-down with the “Every Single Album” podcast last week.
She then contrasted that image with the one she tried to cultivate during her 2017 album “Younger Now,” when she and Hemsworth were back together.
“And so, for ‘Younger Now’ ― the album ― the reason I kind of like played into this innocence was because I think that was a way to keep and a way to stay [innocent],” she said.
Cyrus described her train of thought as, “‘If I’m younger now, if I’m less awake as this sexual woman publicly, then this is going to be the way that I can keep a happy home.’”

But with “Younger Now,” she said, she “didn’t know how to fully do it because I was also balancing the sobriety thing because I wasn’t getting fully sober yet.”
“And so I was like, well, ‘I’m safe and I’m clean and I’m wearing all white and I’m singing songs about nature,’” she said, explaining that she was “just trying to find a persona that could keep my personal life intact.”
It was difficult, Cyrus said, since she’s “super open” and also has “to be careful about not telling other people’s stuff because I, you know, I kind of say everything.”
“Respectfully, Liam was also a part of other big franchises like ‘The Hunger Games,’ and his brother is a Marvel superhero. And so I was also representing the family,” she said.
“My plan was this time, I didn’t want the relationship to fall apart. I wanted it to stay intact,” Cyrus shared. “And the reason why it didn’t work during ‘Bangerz’ was because of that.”
Cyrus and Hemsworth first met on the set of the 2010 movie “The Last Song.” They got engaged in 2012, when Cyrus was only 19 and Hemsworth was 22.
They called off their engagement in 2013 before getting back together in 2016. The same year, the couple announced their second engagement.
Hemsworth and Cyrus eventually made it to the altar in December 2018, but announced their separation a few months later. The two were officially divorced by August 2019.
