Michael Bolton’s family began noticing “weird” symptoms in the days before the singer was diagnosed with brain cancer.
His daughter Taryn told People magazine that family members took notice of Bolton’s behavior when he was bowling.
Bolton bowled out of turn three times during an outing in late 2023, behavior Taryn would describe as “super weird.”
“That was when we were like, ‘Something’s wrong with his brain,’” Taryn shared, in an article published on Wednesday. “Everything that happened was weird for him but not super alarming. When you look back at everything together … We missed so many things.”
Taryn said the family noticed other out-of-character moments earlier in the night, even before they went bowling.
“He fell out of his chair to the left, which is very unusual. He’s super athletic, and he doesn’t drink,” Taryn said. “So he fell, and we were like, ‘What just happened?’”

After experiencing a bad headache, Bolton went to the hospital and underwent an MRI that showed he had a tumor.
After the tumor was removed, doctors confirmed the singer had glioblastoma, a type of cancer that grows rapidly and is more common in older adults.
The now-72-year-old publicly announced in January last year that he had undergone surgery to remove a brain tumor, which forced him to cancel upcoming shows.
“I am now recuperating at home and surrounded by the tremendous love and support of my family,” the singer said at the time. “For the next couple months, I will be devoting my time and energy to my recovery which means I’ll have to take a temporary break from touring.”
The Grammy winner, who is now cancer-free, told People magazine that “Succumbing to the challenge is not an option.”
“You’re really quickly drawn into a duel,” he said. “I guess that’s the way you find out what you’re made of.”
