At long last, Madonna and Elton John have apparently made pop icon peace ― or, at the very least, reached détente ― after publicly trading barbs with one another for about two decades.

On Monday, Madonna revealed she’d been in the audience at “Saturday Night Live” over the weekend to catch John’s performance with fellow musical guest Brandi Carlile. Later, she and John hugged it out backstage ― a sweet moment captured for posterity on the Queen of Pop’s Instagram.

“We Finally Buried the Hatchet!!!” Madonna wrote. “Over the decades it hurt me to know that someone I admired so much shared his dislike of me publicly as an artist. I didn’t understand it.”

The seven-time Grammy winner said she’d decided to attend this weekend’s taping of “SNL” upon learning that John would be appearing.

“I needed to go backstage and confront him,” she added. “When I met him, the first thing out of his mouth was, “Forgive Me” and the wall between us fell down. Forgiveness is a powerful tool. Within minutes. We were hugging.”

And the two music legends could soon be hitting the studio together, as Madonna noted that John had written a song for her and wants to collaborate.

John responded to Madonna’s post by thanking her for “forgiving me and my big mouth” and commending her on her years of HIV/AIDS advocacy work.

“I’m not proud of what I said,” he wrote. “Particularly when I think about all of the groundbreaking work you have done as an artist ― paving the way for an entire generation of female artists to succeed and be true to themselves.”

He went on to note: “I’m grateful we can move forward.”

Madonna and John appeared to be on good terms for much of the 1980s and ’90s. The pair posed together backstage at the 1995 Brit Awards and, three years later, briefly shared the stage alongside Roberta Flack and Sting as part of a Rainforest Foundation Benefit Concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

Their relationship appeared to sour, however, at the 2004 Q Awards when John accused Madonna ― who was one of the night’s winners ― of lip-syncing.

“Madonna, best live act? Fuck off,” John said at the time. “Since when has lip-syncing been live?”

The Rocket Man went even further in 2012 when he and Madonna both received Golden Globe nominations for Best Original Song. Speaking to NBC’s Carson Daly ahead of the ceremony, John said Madonna “doesn’t have a fucking chance of winning tonight.”

Turns out, he was wrong, as Madonna’s song “Masterpiece” from the film “W.E.” snagged the award. Her win was quickly dissed by John’s husband, David Furnish, who called her acceptance speech “embarrassing in its narcissism” in a lengthy Facebook status, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Later in 2012, John escalated the feud even further when he took aim at Madonna’s Super Bowl halftime performance and subsequent MDNA Tour, and also accused her of chasing trends that didn’t suit her.

“Her tour is a disaster and it couldn’t happen to a bigger cunt,” he told Australia’s Channel 7 program that same year. “If Madonna had any common sense, she would have made a record like ‘Ray of Light,’ stayed away from the dance stuff and just been a great pop singer and made great pop records, which she does brilliantly. But no… And she looks like a fucking fairground stripper.”
