Kim Kardashian may have been the villain of the Met Gala in the past — but this year’s justification feels like a stretch.
On Tuesday, several tabloids pounced on a TikTok video of Kardashian leaving her hotel in New York City to attend the this year’s Costume Institute benefit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Footage shows the Skims founder and her eldest daughter, North, leaving the hotel only to be greeted by a horde of photographers and fans calling their names. During the chaotic scene, one of Kardashian’s security guards appears to accidentally step on the long train of her black leather Chrome Hearts dress. In response to the hiccup, Kardashian quickly jerks her head to the security person and briefly swats at him.
Although Kardashian was wearing a matching black leather fedora with a brim that covered some of her face, her body language exhibited annoyance — and it probably wasn’t her best moment. Yet some outlets blew the flub out of proportion, with headlines of numerous articles claiming that the security guard caused Kardashian to “snap.”

When these outlets published their negative spins on social media, people felt the description of her snapping was a bit sensationalized.
“Can we just normalize natural reactions from people? Anyone would have been upset in this situation,” a TikTok user said.
“Someone almost made her fall. She looks amazing!” another commenter said.
“She just tapped him,” another user on TikTok pointed out.
“…Is the snap in the room with us?” a TikToker joked.
“Is that what we call ‘snapping’ these days? a hand motion?” another TikToker questioned.
“Those outfit pieces r works of art from the designer so yeah I’d be pissed too,” said an Instagram user.
“She barely reacted…” another Instagram user said.
It’s easy to understand why some outlets wanted to vilify Kardashian, being that she’s worn some pretty controversial outfits to Met Galas in the past.

Last year, the reality star wore a corset to the fashion fete that was so tight that she appeared to have difficulty breathing. Many social media users criticized Kardashian for this particular look because they felt it promoted unrealistic and unhealthy beauty standards.
In 2022, Kardashian wore Marilyn Monroe’s vintage 1962 dress to the Met Gala and received an onslaught of criticism after she allegedly damaged it by wearing it. Monroe famously sang “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy in the shimmery gown ― fitted with 2,500 rhinestones on sheer, nude-colored fabric ― during his 45th birthday celebration, and the garment had been preserved for its historical significance.
