“Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver on Sunday dinged Donald Trump with a line about HBO’s dark comedy “The White Lotus” during a 42-minute segment exploring the conservative “obsession” with banning transgender women and girls from competing in women’s sports.

Amid the lengthy deep dive, Oliver spotted what he called Trump’s “creepiest compliment,” delivered in February when Trump signed an executive order seeking to nix federal funds from educational programs allowing trans athletes to compete.

“You know I’m not allowed to say this politically, it could end my career,” Trump said at the time of the women and girls surrounding him. “They’re really beautiful people. These are beautiful people but you know, like everything else, it’s a little bit different today. You’re not allowed to say that because if you call a woman or a girl beautiful, that’s the end of your career. But let’s take a chance on it.”

Oliver reflected: “To be completely fair to Trump, I will say his understanding of women’s issues is comparable to his understanding of foreign policy, domestic policy, trade, the economy, the concept of consent, human empathy, and all but one of his children’s names.”

“Trump leads every conversation with a psychosexual energy that makes ‘The White Lotus’ look like ‘The Teletubbies.’”
