Disney pushed the opening of “Elio,” the studio’s upcoming Pixar film, by a week, while unveiling the release dates of Sam Raimi‘s “Send Help” and James L. Brooks‘ “Ella McCay.”

“Ella McCay,” which marks Brooks’ return to the director’s chair after 2010’s “How Do You Know,” has been bumped to a Dec. 12 release date. It had initially been slated for a Sep. 19 bow. Both dates come on different ends of the fall festival season and could signal an awards season push.

Brooks, an Oscar-winner who made classics like “As Good as it Gets,” “Broadcast News” and “Terms of Endearment,” also wrote the script for the comedy. It stars Emma Mackey as the title character, with an ensemble that includes Woody Harrelson, Ayo Edebiri, Kumail Nanjiani, Jack Lowden, Rebecca Hall, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Albert Brooks. The film is about a young politician who becomes governor and her struggles to balance her career with her family life.

“Elio,” an animated science fiction adventure film, will debut on June 20. It was originally slated to open on June 13. That means it will no longer go head-to-head with Universal and DreamWorks’ live-action remake of “How to Train Your Dragon,” which could have cannibalized its core audience of kids and families. In its new date, it will face off against Sony’s “28 Years Later,” a zombie thriller that is pitched at older moviegoers.

Those are also the crowds that will be turning up for “Send Help” and “Ella McCay,” both of which will be released by 20th Century Studios. “Send Help,” a horror film with Rachel McAdams, Chris Pang, Dylan O’Brien, and Dennis Haysbert, will open on Jan. 30. Its competition is “Aang: The Last Airbender,” an animated Paramount film. “Send Help” finds Raimi back in genre mode after making big-budget films like “Spider-Man” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” It is about a woman who is stranded on a remote island with her boss after a plane crash and their struggles to stay alive.
