“Heartstopper” is coming to an end, with its finale set as a feature film.
The hit Netflix series, which ran for three seasons, made the announcement Tuesday morning. “‘Heartstopper’ will return, bigger than ever,” the streamer posted on X. “A ‘Heartstopper’ movie, our final chapter based on Alice Oseman’s upcoming volume six, is coming!!!”
More information was provided in an article on Netflix’s Tudum, confirming that the movie will see Kit Connor and Joe Locke return as Nick and Charlie in addition to serving as executive producers. “Heartstopper” creator Oseman has penned the script with “Still Alice” helmer Wash Westmoreland directing, and filming is set to begin this summer.
“I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the ‘Heartstopper’ story,” Oseman said in a statement. “I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of Heartstopper for your patience and passion. I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion.”
According to Tudum, the “Heartstopper” movie will pick up where Season 3 left off in October, with Nick and Charlie completely in love. “But, with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them,” the synopsis reads. “Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet.”
Over its three seasons, “Heartstopper” has received critical and commercial acclaim, particularly for its depiction of LGBTQ+ characters and topics. Of the show’s portrayal of sex in Season 3, Variety critic Aramide Tinubu wrote: “In depicting the fullness of sexual exploration (not just acts of penetration) but the talking, fun, sensuality, kissing, awkwardness and cuddling, ‘Heartstopper’ removes the reactionary taboos surrounding teen sex and instead presents it how it should be: a pleasurable and thrilling human experience.”
