Gloria Steinem , the groundbreaking journalist, author and activist who became one of the defining leaders of second-wave feminism and spent more than half a century fighting for women’s equality, has died. She was 92.

Steinem died Wednesday, September 2, at her home in New York City, according to an announcement from her foundation. A cause of death was not disclosed. The statement announcing her death said Steinem “passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her.”
