“Las irresponsables” is produced by Arcadia and Afrodita Audiovisual AIE, with the support of 3Cat, Atresmedia, Movistar Plus+, ICEC and ICAA. The project reunites Arcadia with the work of celebrated Argentine playwright Javier Daulte, whose original stage version premiered at the Temporada Alta Festival in 2021 and became a post-pandemic hit at Barcelona’s Villarroel Theatre. Arcadia previously adapted Daulte’s “¿Estás aquí?” for the big screen.

Starring Laia Marull, Betsy Túrnez and Àgata Roca, the film tells the story of three friends who escape the city for a weekend in a luxury smart home full of fine art. While their WhatsApp chat is full of good intentions, none of them is particularly excited about the getaway. But after the first night, everything changes. Confessions, emotions and buried desires come pouring out over the dinner table, revealing that friendship might be the best excuse to finally act on their most reckless impulses.

Also featuring Jordi Sánchez, Ruth Llopis and Berto Romero, the film is based on Daulte’s play of the same name and was written by Mañá and Marta Buchaca (“Litus”). It closed this year’s BCN Film Fest on May 2.

“’Las irresponsables’ is a celebration of life, of reconciliation, of friendship,” said Mañá. “That’s what I felt when I saw the play. But what really seduced me was the transgressive idea of imagining who else lives inside each of us. That ‘irresponsible’ woman who does what she shouldn’t. The stranger… the one who scares us but also excites us.”

Catalan director Laura Mañá first rose to prominence as an actress under directors like Bigas Luna and Vicente Aranda. She made her directorial debut in 2000 with “Sexo por compasión,” which screened at Sundance and Toronto and won numerous awards at festivals in Málaga, Guadalajara and Miami. In 2003, she earned the Méliès Prize for Best European Film at Fantasporto with “Palabras encadenadas.”

Her credits include acclaimed TV movies such as “Clara Campoamor, la mujer olvidada” and “Federica Montseny, la mujer que habla,” as well as the Netflix hit “Te quiero, imbécil” and the 2023 true crime drama “El cuerpo en llamas,” which topped charts in Spain and broke into Netflix’s global Top 5.
