The president has plenty of backstory with the performing arts venue, having installed himself as chairman as he replaced board members with loyalists.

So his attendance on opening night of the musical’s run understandably caused a stir, and he received cheers and jeers as he stood on the balcony.

Trump’s night at the theater also caught the attention of a certain talk show host who imagined the actors’ boycott spreading to unexpected places.

“Trump and Melania attended the Kennedy Center’s opening night of ‘Les Miserables,’” Fallon began. “The actors were told they could sit out tonight if they didn’t want to perform for Trump. As soon as she heard, Melania was like, “K, byeeeee.” Fallon waved and walked off camera.

The laughter from “The Tonight Show” audience was hearty.
