Gary Oldman has been vocal about conquering his past alcohol addiction after seeking treatment.
Now, in a new interview with the Radio Times, the actor shared how his past alcoholism led to a “mortifying” moment with former co-star Demi Moore.
After being asked if “admiration” is important to him, Oldman recalled an incident in which he was “unprofessional” on the set of 1995′s “The Scarlet Letter” after drinking too much while on a lunch break.
“I think the worst thing you can do is inspire disappointment. I was in ‘The Scarlet Letter’ with Demi Moore, and I had intermittent bouts of boozing during filming,” he said. “It was towards the end of [my drinking] where I thought, ‘If I carry on like this…’”
Oldman added that he was “in a very dark place” at the time.
The Oscar winner said he ultimately apologized to Moore, whom he starred opposite in the film, over the “destructive” faux pas.
“I got back on the set to do quite a big scene, and I got through it. You wouldn’t really know, but I was quite tipsy. And the next day, I said to her, ‘I’m so sorry, you must hate me,’” he continued.
Oldman recalled being “mortified that I’d been so unprofessional,” telling the outlet that Moore reacted with a disheartening reply.
“And she said to me, “I don’t hate you. It’s OK. I’m just disappointed,” he claimed.

Despite their exchange, the two apparently went on to make amends and even reunited in recent months.
After Moore earned major hype and critical acclaim over her role in the 2024 film “The Substance,” Oldman gushed over the leading lady and her shining moment.
“I’ve not really been that in touch with her, but I just actually reconnected with her because I’ve seen her recently. She is such a wonderful person, Demi,” Oldman told the New York Post at the Screen Actors Guild Awards back in February. “She really is very special.”
