Dana Carvey admitted that his recent Elon Musk impersonation on Saturday Night Live was not his best work — but it certainly got the job done.

Carvey appeared in the SNL cold open the week that Donald Trump clinched a second presidential term with help from the tech billionaire. After the SNL cast jokingly vowed that they “never wavered” in their support for the president-elect, Carvey hopped on stage, spoofing that viral moment Musk awkwardly jumped on stage behind Trump at a campaign rally in October.

Musk had a bit of a meltdown over the impersonation and criticized Carvey on X, which Carvey responded to in a recent episode of his Superfly podcast.

“I can’t do Elon Musk very well,” he admitted on the podcast. “But I can do something that sounds not like anything.”

He explained that he more focused on nailing Musk’s unique accent.

“He has an incredible accent — South Africa via Canada, via Pennsylvania,” Carvey said. “It’s almost like, it’s a little bit of Australian in there, a little bit of British, but he’s not totally that.”

During the episode, Carvey’s Musk impression showed him celebrating Trump’s White House win as if it were his own.

“Check it out, dark MAGA. Yeah! But seriously, I run the country now. America’s gonna be like one of my rockets that’s super cool and super fun. But there’s a slight chance it could blow up, and everybody dies,” Carvey said in an enthusiastic impression of Musk’s accent, while hopping on stage. “I’m dark MAGA! Steal the White House! USA! USA!”

Musk slammed the performance on X, writing, “They are so mad that @realDonaldTrump won.”

He appeared unimpressed with Carvey’s impersonation of him. “Dana Carvey just sounds like Dana Carvey,” he commented.

Carvey also mentioned that he plans on returning to Saturday Night Live in December, but it’s unclear if he will be playing a new role or impersonating Musk or President Joe Biden when he does.

While many fans were expecting to see Maya Rudolph impersonating Kamala Harris throughout the rest of the show’s 50th season, they will certainly be seeing more of  James Austin Johnson’s  Trump impression, and Bowen Yang’s hilarious take on J.D. Vance.
