“Daily Show” correspondent Desi Lydic mocked President Donald Trump on Wednesday after he revealed what the Declaration of Independence means to him in an interview with ABC News’ Terry Moran.
When asked about a copy of the document that was put on display in the Oval Office per his request, Trump told Moran that the Declaration of Independence “means exactly what it says.”
“It’s a declaration. It’s a declaration of unity and love and respect. And it means a lot, and it’s something very special to our country,” Trump said.
If it’s been a while since your high school civics class, the Declaration of Independence isn’t about love — it outlines the tyranny and injustice the 13 original colonies suffered under the English monarchy.
But what makes Trump’s remarks “even more sad,” Lydic said, is that the document is about the 13 colonies “filing for divorce” from Britain.
“It’s the one thing Trump should absolutely recognize,” Lydic joked in a nod to the president divorcing Ivana Trump and Marla Maples prior to marrying first lady Melania Trump in 2005.
Moments earlier, Lydic chuckled at a freeze frame of a clip showing Moran’s reaction to Trump, which caused the “Daily Show” audience to erupt in laughter.
“He looks like a teacher about to call the school psychologist,” Lydic quipped.
“But of course he made that face, Trump said the Declaration of Independence meant unity. Unity is the opposite of independence. How did Trump find the one time that unity and love is the wrong answer?”
