Margaret Cho likened Ellen DeGeneres to a “mean girl” while reflecting on her connection to the comedian.
While appearing on “The Kelly Mantle Show,” Cho claimed that the former talk show host was “really weird and not nice” to her throughout her career.
“It’s so weird now, [the] public perception of her is more true to … she’s mean,” Cho, who referred to DeGeneres as “somebody that I’ve known for such a long time,” said. “She was like a mean girl, kind of, but also she would be real nice.”
“I think she always had negative feelings toward me because her girlfriends and wives always liked me … There’s a kind of woman [who] loves a female comic,” Cho added. “But yeah, Ellen was really weird, and not nice to me for most of my career.”
The “Fire Island” star went on to recall opening up for DeGeneres in her earlier days. Cho alleged that the actress gave her the cold shoulder when she later appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” which ended in 2022.
“She acted like we just met,” Cho told Mantle. “And I’m like, ‘Bitch, what?’ That’s weird. We go way back.”
DeGeneres’ reps did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.
Elsewhere in the episode, Cho recalled an unsettling incident that allegedly occurred when David Bowie served as a guest on DeGeneres’ talk show.
Cho explained to Mantle she had attended one of Bowie’s concerts dressed in what she called a “Chinese emperor outfit.” The following day, Bowie praised Cho’s ensemble while on DeGeneres’ show.
“David Bowie had been on the show, and he was so excited that the night before that, I had come to his show wearing this giant Chinese emperor outfit,” Cho began to explain, claiming that DeGeneres had nixed Bowie’s comments about her from the broadcast.
“He was really thrilled about it, and he talked at length about it. And she cut it out of the show, which made me so mad,” Cho said, adding that a producer “who’s a really good friend of mine” gave her the heads up about it.
“[They] had to call me and tell me, ‘I can’t believe she did this, but she cut it out of the show. You need to know that [Bowie] was going on and on about your outfit. He loves you,’” she continued.
The stand-up comedian admitted that Bowie’s sentiments could’ve been edited out for the sake of time, before adding, “I don’t know if it was personal, maybe it was for time. But still, I’m gonna take it personally because I decided to.”
DeGeneres faced claims in 2020 that her daytime talk show was a toxic workplace, including claims of racism, intimidation and sexual misconduct.
The “SNL” alum alleged that the claims weren’t the reason that she ultimately wrapped up the long-running show, but she later got candid about how the backlash affected her.
