Chet Hanks turned to his award-winning father, Tom Hanks, for acting tips ahead of his breakout role in Netflix’s new hit show, “Running Point.”
“I’ve always asked him for advice when it comes to acting and he’s always given me really great advice,” the rising star told Page Six exclusively at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards last September.
Chet, 34, shared that Tom, 68, told him three key things he has to do to be successful in Hollywood.
“He just said, ‘If you just know your lines, and you show up on time, and you’re nice to everybody, that gets you a long way,” the “Surreal Life” alum said.
Chet — who plays Travis Bugg, an unruly Los Angeles Waves point guard, in “Running Point” — shared his excitement for the Kate Hudson-led series at the award show.
The sports comedy show, created in part by “The Office” alum Mindy Kaling, garnered the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s “Top 10 TV Shows in the US” list shortly after its Feb. 27 premiere.
It’s unclear whether Chet will appear on the second season, but he told Bustle this week that he plans to continue acting, as he considers it to be the “family business.”
“My dad’s an actor. My older brother’s an actor. My mom. This was the family business, so I [knew] that was something I would go into at some point,” he told the publication.
Despite Tom being there to give his son solid career advice, the Oscar winner recently admitted that he hasn’t always been the best father to his four kids.
“I made every mistake. You know, you scar the kids somehow in the same exact way. And as they get older, you come back around and [say], ‘Hey, can I talk about what a knothead I was with you for all those years?’” the “Forest Gump” star said on the “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast in October 2024.
“But I would say at the same time … does it come up to be 50-50? Maybe the attitude and the life that we led. The laughs, that stuff’s worth its weight in gem-encrusted gold.”
Tom shares Chet with wife Rita Wilson, along with son Truman, 29. He also has two older children, Colin Hanks, 47, and Elizabeth Hanks, 42, from his first marriage to Samantha Lewes, who died in 2002.
