Billionaire Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates’ daughter, 22-year-old Phoebe Gates, recently sat down on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast and confirmed that introducing potential boyfriends to her father is just as unpleasant as it is for everyone else.
Well, especially for her dates.
“I think, terrifying, for the guy. For me? Hilarious,” the younger Gates told host Alex Cooper during an interview released Wednesday. “Because my dad’s, like, pretty socially awkward; he’s said he has Asperger’s. To me, it’s so funny, but for guys, I think they get, like, really wigged out.”
Bill Gates has never publicly spoken about having Asperger’s syndrome, but wrote in his recent memoir, “Source Code: My Beginnings,” that he “probably would be diagnosed on the autism spectrum” today.

Phoebe Gates, meanwhile, has started dating British investor Arthur Donald, 26, the grandson of none other than Beatles legend Paul McCartney. While it’s unclear whether Donald was ever subject to an awkward intro, Gates recalled being embarrassed after Melinda French, her mother, signed her now-ex-husband up to drive her and a date to a high school dance.
“First off, my dad insisted on us listening to NPR the entire 30-minute drive,” she told Cooper. “He stopped for fast food, then he calls the guy — he’s like, ‘Be responsible tonight, Max Demonhower.’ His name was Maxwell Danenhower. Literally wanted to die.”
Fortunately for everyone involved, Gates now seems to take her dad’s awkward chats with her romantic interests in stride.
“It’s become easier for me, because it’s just funny,” she told Cooper. “Like, when you introduce a guy to your dad, depending on how he reacts, that’s how you know if he’s gonna be a good guy or not.”
