Will Sharpe and Ayo Edebiri are set to unite in the new rom-com series “Prodigies” for Apple TV+.
Sharpe, who made a major splash with “The White Lotus” and was recently seen taking Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin on a tour of Poland in “A Real Pain,” created the seven-episode comedy and will write and direct. Sister, the BAFTA-winning production company behind “Black Doves,” is producing. Edebiri, who has won a Golden Globe, two SAG Awards and an Emmy for her performance on “The Bear,” will also serve as an exec producer alongside Sharpe.
Described in the synopsis as an “unusual take” on a classic romantic comedy, “Prodigies” is set to explore the universal complexities of long-term relationships through the lens of a very unique couple. The story follows Didi (Edebiri) and Ren (Sharpe), two ex-child prodigies who have been together since they were children and, now in their early 30s, are starting to question whether their very ordinary existence is living up to the extraordinary promise of their childhood. As the description goes, they, inevitably, find themselves asking the same questions of their relationship.
“As individual hopes and needs feed into and conflict with their shared lives, the series challenges the fallacy at the heart of romantic storytelling — that the tale is over when the heroes get together,” the synopsis reads. “In life, surely, that is just the beginning?”
Jane Featherstone (“Black Doves,” “Giri/Haji”), Naomi de Pear (“This Is Going to Hurt,” “Flowers”) and Katie Carpenter (“Landscapers,” “Flowers”) will also exec produce the series for Sister.
While he may have made his major international breakthrough for his role in the second season of “The White Lotus,” Sharpe has been working behind the camera since his feature directorial debut “Black Pond” in 2011. He created, wrote and directed the BAFTA-winning dark comedy-drama series “Flowers,” which ran on the BBC from 2016-2018 and starred Olivia Colman. In 2021, he teamed up with Colman again for HBO/Sky crime series “Landscapers,” which he also wrote for and directed. The same year saw the release of his last feature as writer/director, “The Electrical Life of Louis Wain,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch. In 2020, he won the BAFTA TV Award for best supporting actor for his role in “Giri/Haji”.
