Amazon MGM Studios has set a theatrical release for “Nishaanchi,” an intense crime drama directed by Indian auteur Anurag Kashyap that marks the acting debut of Aaishvary Thackeray.
The film is produced by Ajay Rai and Ranjan Singh under the banner of Jar Pictures in association with Flip Films. The ensemble cast also features Vedika Pinto, Monika Panwar, Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub and Kumud Mishra in pivotal roles.
Crafted for the big screen, “Nishaanchi” delivers what the studio describes as a gripping cinematic experience that delves into the complex lives of two brothers who walk starkly different paths, exploring how their choices shape their destinies.
Several films directed by Kashyap have played at Cannes, including “Kennedy” (2023), “Psycho Raman” (2016), “Ugly” (2013), “Bombay Talkies” (2013) and “Gangs of Wasseypur” (2012). In addition, several films produced by him have made it to the Croisette, including “Masaan” (2015), “The Lunchbox” (2013), “Monsoon Shootout” (2013), “The Congress” (2013) and “Udaan” (2010).
“For us at Amazon MGM Studios, collaborating with Anurag Kashyap, a maestro of raw, unfiltered, and emotionally charged storytelling, has been nothing short of incredible,” said Nikhil Madhok, head of originals, Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, India. “His distinctive style redefines genres, crafting narratives that grip audiences and leave them wanting more.”
Madhok underscored the studio’s commitment to theatrical releases, noting that “Nishaanchi” is part of an initial slate of “compelling cinematic movies” coming to theaters over the next few years. He highlighted the film’s “intricately woven story that blends suspense, love, conflict, and layered characters” and called the music “a standout element, and a testament to Anurag’s unique creative vision.”
Kashyap revealed the project’s lengthy development history, explaining that the script was written in 2016. “Since then, I have been looking to make this film the way it should be, and was looking for a studio who trusted me to do that, whole heartedly,” the director said. “Amazon MGM loved it, believed in it, and became the wall behind us.”
The filmmaker described “Nishaanchi” as “a story full of raw human emotions, love, lust, power, crime and punishment, betrayal, redemption and the consequences of it all.” He praised his collaborators, saying he’s been “extremely fortunate to find a bunch of good people and superb actors and my most beautiful crew to tell this story in the best possible way.”
Kashyap noted that working with Amazon MGM Studios “has been an immensely rewarding and beautiful experience” that reminded him of “my early days of filmmaking.”
“Nishaanchi” is set for theatrical release on September 19.
