“Late Show” host Stephen Colbert on Wednesday celebrated Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Colbert praised Mamdani for running a “relentlessly positive campaign” and focusing on “issues that affect everyday New Yorkers,” which led to him gaining a 7-point lead over Cuomo.
“Do you know how hard it is in New York City to be that far away from another person?” he asked.
Colbert also spotted an unusual line in Cuomo’s concession speech.
“Tonight was not our night,” Cuomo said. “Tonight was Assemblyman Mamdani’s night, and he put together a great campaign and he touched young people.”
“That can’t be easy for Cuomo to admit,” Colbert said. “Cuz touching young people, kind of his brand.”
After a beat, he added: “Allegedly.”
Cuomo resigned as governor in 2021 after about a dozen women accused him of sexual harassment. Cuomo has denied the allegations.
