A Man on the Inside creator Mike Schur has a hilarious response to anyone hoping for guests in a second season.
Speaking with Decider about the Ted Danson-led comedy, Schur — who is married to Only Murders in the Building co-executive producer J.J. Philbin — joked that if Netflix decides to give them a second season, they will have a tough time finding any actors who haven’t already been to the Arconia.
“I think Only Murders has essentially cornered the market on guest stars,” Schur said with a laugh. “There aren’t any guest stars left. They’ve all been on that show.”
It may be a joke but the star power on Only Murders in the Building is anything but laughable. The most recent season of the Hulu comedy starring Steve Martin, Selena Gomez, and Martin Short welcomed Eva Longoria, Zach Galifianakis, Eugene Levy, Meryl Streep, Paul Rudd, Molly Shannon, and more. One incredible scene from OMITB Season 4 even featured Streep — who we should note has 21 Academy Award nominations — engaged in a basement fistfight with a character played by Melissa McCarthy. Glorious television, truly.
On the sheer number of A-Listers featured in Only Murders in the Building Season 4 alone, Schur stated, “It is wild to watch that show these days.”
As for his own hopes about a potential A Man on the Inside Season 2, it’s still up in the air as to whether or not the Netflix gods will give The Good Place creator another go around with Danson, Stephanie Beatriz, Lilah Richcreek Estrada, and the other cast members. That said, with the open ending of Season 1, it certainly feels like conversations could be happening.
“If we’re lucky enough to have another season, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it,” Schur told Decider of his hopes for guest stars and cameos in the future.
Not that A Man on the Inside needs any more talent with Danson and the others, including a cast of elderly actors like Sally Struthers, John Getz, and Stephen McKinley-Henderson. Then again, neither does Only Murders in the Building and that’s what makes it so fun.
Decider also spoke with A Man on the Inside star Mary Elizabeth Ellis, who was more than happy to name names of who she would love to see visit the set if they get a second season.
“I would love to have Carol Kane on. I mean, [she’s] incredible. Does Shirley MacLaine want to come do our show? Let’s get her in there,” Ellis said. “There are so many incredible older actors who have been around for so long whose stories I would love to just sit around and hear.”
No word yet on whether or not Season 2 has gotten the green light at Netflix, but the show premiered at No. 1 on the TV charts, has a high overall audience and critic score, and presumably costs a fraction of what some shows on the platform ask for.
That’s the trifecta for a renewal.
Netflix, please just do the right thing and give this show another season. Our hearts cannot take it if this bittersweet joyride ends after one season.
All eight episodes of A Man on the Inside is streaming now on Netflix.
