James Gunn‘s “Superman” is set to launch a brand new DC Universe by throwing viewers into a world already populated with superheroes. That means the film’s cast has a supersized ensemble, from David Corenswet as the Man of Steel to Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Nathan Fillon (Guy Gardner), Isabela Mercad (Hawkgirl) and more. There’s also Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen and more comic book regulars.

Does Gunn worry about “Superman” viewers getting too confused with so many characters to meet and remember? It’s a question recently posed to the writer-director by Esquire Philippines, although Gunn is quite confident that will not be the case.

“No, not really, because I’ve screened the movie for so many people and saw that people aren’t confused,” Gunn said (via IGN). “So I know from fact that it’s not confusing.”

“We’re used to seeing movies with protagonists and Superman is definitely the protagonist of Superman, and he has his work friends and he has his play friends,” Gunn explained. “Now, I don’t know if the Justice Gang are his play friends or if his work friends at the Daily Planet are his work friends or his play friends, but that’s the two groups of his friends from different places. And just because they have insignias on their costumes or superpowers doesn’t mean they’re not like any other supporting character in any movie.”

Gunn then put things into perspective a different way: “I think ‘Oppenheimer’ has three times as many speaking roles as we do. So I think people are fine.”

“Oppenheimer” is Christopher Nolan’s Oscar winner about the creation of the atomic bomb. With a cast of more than 25 actors with speaking roles, the movie dazzled audiences around the world to the tune of $975 million at the worldwide box office. Gunn and DC Studios would love to see those kinds of results for “Superman.”

“Superman” opens in theaters July 11 from Warner Bros. Watch Gunn’s interview with Esquire Philippines in the video below.
