Leave it up to Thelma to be a true ride or die — even if it’s just for a dress.
Geena Davis opened up to Us Weekly in an interview published Wednesday about her controversial 1992 Oscars outfit, which she wore to the ceremony after being nominated for her role in “Thelma & Louise.”
Her outfit was truly in a league of its own.

Davis’ poofy white gown — which was “made specifically” for her by Ruth Meyers and Bill Hargate — has a very overt ’80s prom dress vibe. It included black straps, a silky fitted bodice and a puffy white skirt that’s short in the front and long in the back — just like a beautiful Kentucky Waterfall haircut. From the side, the skirt even looks reminiscent of Falkor from “The Neverending Story.”

The “Beetlejuice” alum paired the dress with white gloves, starkly black pantyhose and chunky shoes.
It’s a very specific look that may have been considered dated at the time when mainstream style was shifting from the pastel preppiness of the 1980s to the sleeker Calvin Klein and grunge aesthetics of the early ’90s.

Regardless of what most may think, “The Fly” alum maintained to Us Weekly that she thinks the outfit was — and still is — “awesome.”
“I was surprised,” Davis said of the negative reaction to the dress. “And I went to a lunch with several other female actors at some point before the next Oscars, and we were all talking and somehow that dress came up and I said, ‘You know, f**k them. I thought that was great. I should just wear it again this coming year.’ And they were like, ‘Yeah, let’s all wear copies of it!’ It was my favorite fantasy — that we would do that. But I thought it was awesome.”
Yet, that poofy dress brigade at the 1993 Oscars never happened. Instead, Davis attended the ceremony in a much tamer look that consisted of a long, slinky black dress with a cute swirly neckline.

Although people at the time weren’t feeling Davis’ dress, social media users today on Reddit appreciated the look.
“Have people put this dress on the worst dressed list? Yes. Do I think it’s a fun dress for a hot person to wear? Yes,” one user said.
“Back when stars had fun on the red carpet!” another user pointed out. “Circa when mullet dresses were edgy!”
“The bodice is tailored to perfection,” a third user said.
“Y’know if it weren’t for the sheer black tights and almost leprechaun shoe, I might actually like this,” a Reddit user admitted.
And it seems that the “Accidental Tourist” Oscar winner agrees with that sentiment, to an extent. She told Us Weekly that she regrets wearing the black pantyhose.
“I think that would’ve helped if I didn’t,” Davis quipped of her dark stockings. “But I still have it. I have all my Oscar gowns that weren’t borrowed, packed in, like, bridal boxes preserved.”
Here’s just hoping she still has her silvery number from the 1989 Academy Awards, because as most agree, it’s a stunner.
